Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and I am tremendously proud much of the civil rights movement originated in Georgia. I admire Martin Luther King because of his vision of love, unity, compassion and tolerance and how he succeeded in triumphing against the forces of hate. So, for me, Martin Luther King Day means a day to celebrate and love each other, to celebrate peace, happiness and tolerance and hope for the future. That’s what Martin Luther King Day means to me. It is important that we pay our humble tribute to a great man that taught America the importance of these values. It is a day to for honoring not just the man but also the values he represented. Here is an article from the King Center website explaining the meaning of the day: MLK Day.
The article discusses the importance of how Martin Luther King challenged us to live up to our noblest principles. It’s easy to talk the talk but quite different to walk the walk so it’s important we challenge ourselves. The man was also a force for real democracy and freedom and that’s what this country is all about.
Today is a day of interracial and intercultural cooperation because of Martin’s legacy. This wonderful, powerful, loving legacy is something that we as Americans should always be proud of and always should cherish and honor. The holiday is a as the above website stated is a peoples holiday and I agree wholeheartedly.
I live in the state of Georgia so I have a special love for Atlanta. The King Center along with the Ebenezer Baptist Church where the Civil Rights Movement was spearheaded is in Atlanta, GA. This is something for the state of Georgia to be and have something to be truly and genuinely proud of. I am proud of Atlanta and Martin Luther King Jr and other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. They are and were true American heroes who made history and taught me a lot of what it means to be American. These historical leaders make me tremendously proud and I feel privileged that they left this legacy to future generations like myself. I hope to be able to live up to the legacy because I want future generations to have it too.
