Happy Halloween To Everybody!

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Hope Everyone Has A Happy Halloween!

Today is Halloween and my wife and I will be going over to my sister and brother in law’s place. His neighborhood has a lot of trick or treaters and they have asked us to hand out candy from their house while they take their kids around the neighborhood trick or treating. So, the wife and I agreed and will be doing that. Should be a lot of fun! I’ll probably wear a scary mask of some kind while handing out candy to the kids tonight.

happy halloween

My brother in law and sister have a really nice house in their neighborhood and they will have pizza for us when we arrive. Wife and I will be getting the drinks on the way over to their house. I have never seen Halloween in my sister and brother in law’s neighborhood but I bet it’s going to be really awesome! So, I look forward to celebrating this holiday at their house.

I also like to sometimes find frugal ways to celebrate a holiday or to throw a party that way I can have a good time at a reasonable price. Here is a website that discusses some frugal ways to Halloween: Frugal Ways To Celebrate. Here are some of the ideas from this link that I personally like:

Emily Co from Popsugar writes in her article “31 Frugal Ways to Celebrate Halloween:”

1. Watch a scary movie at home with friends.
2. Carve a pumpkin with friends.
3. Bring out a Ouija board for a spooky night.
4. Go camping, make s’mores, and tell ghost stories around a fire.
5. Make these Halloween decorations for a few dollars.
6. Borrow a horror book from the library.
7. Visit a pumpkin patch.
8. Check to see what free Halloween events are going on in your city.
9. Create your own haunted house at home with things you already have.

I thought some of the above ideas were great ideas for celebrating Halloween frugally. Anyway, time for me to end this blog post here and I hope everybody has a Happy Halloween!

Slow Day Today For Just Taking It Easy

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Slow Day Today To Just Unwind

Today is just going to be a chill day for me. Of course, I try my best to blog every day and today is no exception. I think one of the things I will do is maybe get a tabel top game of Ticket To Ride going with my wife or paying a visit to my sister and brother in law’s house. My wife and I also got a subscription to Shudder which is supposed to be a service like Netflix except it is only horror movies.

slow day

I might go ahead and see if I can watch Nightmare on Elm Street on the Shudder service. My favorite Nightmare on Elm Street is Nightmare on Elm Street 3. I remember when all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies first came out. I used to be frightened of the prospect of having to sleep at night because I was afraid Freddy would come and get me in my sleep. Still, the movies were great for their time and I still enjoy watching the third Nightmare on Elm Street.

Turns out the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise will celebrate it’s 30th anniversary this November 9th. That is interesting! Here is the link that talks about it: Nightmare On Elm Street Celebrates It’s 30th Anniversary

The article discusses what inspired Wes Craven to create “A Nightmare On Elm Street:”

Sean O’Connel of CinemaBlend writes in his article “A Nightmare On Elm Street Was Inspired By This Horrific True Story:”

The way Wes Craven describes it, he came up with the idea for A Nightmare on Elm Street after reading an L.A. Times article about a family that had survived the Killing Fields in Cambodia. They made it to the United States, but a young boy in the family still found himself haunted by terrible nightmares while he slept. Craven says:
He told his parents he was afraid that if he slept, the thing chasing him would get him, so he tried to stay awake for days at a time. When he finally fell asleep, his parents thought this crisis was over. Then they heard screams in the middle of the night. By the time they got to him, he was dead. He died in the middle of a nightmare. Here was a youngster having a vision of a horror that everyone older was denying. That became the central line of Nightmare on Elm Street.”

Wow man! That’s incredible! The kid was suffering from PTSD and it was the PTSD that killed him in one of his nightmares. Just nuts and crazy! And that’s what inspired Nightmare on Elm Street. It was a kid with PTSD who died at the hands of PTSD right in the middle of one of his nightmares.

Anyway, I think on this slow day, I will also play some video games too! A slow day on the night before Halloween is also good to play a horror video game called “Layers of Fear” which has been good so far!

First Stage Show Coming Up In December

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

My First Stage Show Will Be Performed Soon

Looks like I will be performing my first stage show here pretty soon. This particular stage show will be for an audience of about 100 children. The person who booked me for it was the same person who was my client yesterday. I am looking forward to it! It’s good to finally graduate up to performing a stage show!

Another piece of good news is that I have a client who is sending me the head twister illusion. I am really looking forward to working with this illusion. I plan to include the head twister illusion along with the floating magic carpet illusion in my first stage show. Most likely, I will use my wife to practice the head twister illusion and the presentation of the illusion.

first stage show

I have a ton of work on my plate as things are and I am very happy to see that! I have pretty much learned some important time management skills. One of them I wrote about in my previous blog post talking about the importance of getting up early in the morning.

I found a great article that talks about important principles of time management skills here: Principles In Time Management. I really liked the hierarchy of needs principle in this article. I think this is extremely important in building a good strategy in time management:

1. You have a hierarchy of needs
You have probably heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It outlines the basic needs that we have as human beings. It is an explanation of the way we, as humans, think about our lives. We put things into a hierarchy with the most important

Creating Positive Performance writes in it’s article “5 Core Principles Of Time Management:”

As a person you have basic needs that have to be met. These include food and water, air, clothing and shelter. If you do not meet these basic needs, you will struggle to get anything of importance done. If you don’t believe me, try sitting through an important meeting when you are incredibly hungry. You will lack energy and concentration. Your mind constantly focuses on the need to tackle your hunger. You simply won’t be able to get things done unless your most basic needs are met.
From there, you have your need for safety, companionship, psychological needs and needs that feed your self-worth. All of these needs (includes wants) play into your daily life roles. You might be a mother, a wife, an employee, a business owner, a friend or several other hats that are worn by you. All of these things fight for time in your day. When people fall behind in their work, these are often the first needs to be dropped. On a rare occasion, that is not a major problem, however if you consistently deny yourself the warmth of interpersonal interactions and self care, it will begin to impact on your mental and emotional wellbeing. As a consequence, your performance will suffer.

Their are a few important other principles of time management in this article but I believe this principle above is the most important one.

Early Morning And Already Up

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Getting A Walk In This Early Morning

Went to bed early last night at about 9 o’clock and got up to go for a walk about 5 o’clock this morning. It was a beautiful morning and at the time I was walking, it was still dark outside. The sky was absolutely beautiful with all the stars in the night, early morning sky. Even right now at about 6 o’clock in the morning it seems it’s still dark outside amazingly enough.

Early Morning

It feels great to have my walk in already so I don’t have to worry about that. I already ate some breakfast as well. So, all that is left to do is pick up my rental car at Enterprise Rent a Car and then load up the rental vehicle and I’ll be ready to head out this evening for my gig. I like to get everything loaded up early that way all I have to do is get into the car and take off without any stress.

I have to say, I have also got quite a bit done since going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting up early. I managed to walk a few miles, eat some breakfast and now doing this blog post. So, getting up early leaves room for other priorities, which is good. I like to have plenty of time for other priorities that way I can take care of getting some exercise in, plenty of sleep and then still have tons of time to complete my business and financial goals.

I found this website that talks about the benefits of getting up early in the morning to get a workout in: Benefits Of Getting Up Early To Get A Workout In.

I personally think some of the benefits for me has been more mental and physical energy, more time for other priorities, helping me to complete personal goals such as getting into better shape, cultivate some consistency, develop self discipline and I am able to sleep much better. Well, I hope you guys enjoy the article! Take care!

Upcoming Events For The Weekend

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Have A Few Upcoming Events I Will Be Performing At

It looks like this weekend I will be pretty busy. I will be doing a performance for the Royston Housing Authority tomorrow and then a close up magic show for a client on Saturday. I am looking forward to both events! This will be great fun!

Tomorrow, I will be performing one of my favorite illusions for children’s magic shows (I have been performing this for probably over a year now and have gotten good at the presentation of it so it looks awesome) is the floating magic carpet where I float a child on a “floating magic carpet.” On Saturday, I will be performing for an older crowd.

upcoming events

Probably my favorite tricks for the older crowd is the signed quarter through the steel bar, bottle cap through the coca cola bottle, and the vanishing signed quarter that re-appears in a nest of wallets, folded inside a red cloth that is sealed in a plastic bag.

Some of my favorite card tricks to perform for an older crowd is “I Name Your Card And You Name My Card” (this is not the real name of the trick, just the name of my personal presentation of the trick) which really blows everybody’s minds. I also enjoy a version of Card To Wallet I learned from another magician, “Card in Hand” and a version of “Triumph” where at the end of my presentation, the cards all turn clear and see through except the volunteer’s chosen card. It’s a great ending to a “Triumph” card routine.

One leader I really admire and have taken some advice from is the President of our nation, President Barak Obama. One of the pieces of advice he gives is start early. I usually arrive early at my gigs so that I have plenty of time to set up magic show and be ready. This is especially important for this weekend of upcoming events.

However, one things I just started doing that seems to be working spectacularly is going to bed at a reasonable hour, getting 7 to 8 hours sleep and then getting up early in the morning. I have goals that are personal, financial and business related. In order to do all the tasks that helps me to accomplish as many of my personal, financial and business goals, I pretty much have to get up early so that I have time to get everything done and still be up at certain times that only certain business goals can be accomplished (such as cold calling potential clients, you can only do this at certain times of the day).

So, this, I noticed, has been tremendously helpful. Plus it enables me to get my morning exercise in and to eat a good breakfast so I have plenty of fuel throughout the day. I also like to prepare for upcoming events the night before or even sometimes, two nights before. That way, I am not in a rush to organize and make sure I have everything on the day of my event.

Here is a link that talks about a few other things that President Barak Obama does to help him get things done throughout his day. I think this would be useful for anybody out there who wish to accomplish his or her goals: President Barak Obama’s Way Of Getting Things Done.

I hope everybody enjoys the link and has a wonderful day!

Trade Show Magic Video Has Been Complete

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

I Got A Trade Show Magic Video Finished!

Very pleased and happy to announce that I got a trade show magic video complete. This will be the demo video that I use on a part of my website that will be about trade show magic. I am very pleased with this accomplishment and having it up. It’s not the best video, but it’s better than nothing. It’s much better than my first demo video though, so that’s the good news. I would like to go ahead and share with you this new video, which is the long version:

I am very pleased to have this demo video going. Pretty soon, I will be having a section to this website that includes this demo video that is all about trade show magic.

trade show magic video

As some of you already know, trade shows are where people of a particular industry get together and constantly buy, sell product and also get leads from potential clients who would be interested in their services.

Here is the short version of the video:

This particular demo video was shot at the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta, GA this year. Looks like the next one will be in 2018 rather than in 2017 but I could be wrong. I found this on their website here: 2018 IWF. Looks like this time it will be August 22, 2018 through August 25, 2018. I would also like to give my thanks and gratitude to my client CNC Factory, Inc. who paid for this demo video and took the shots for me. In addition, the company responsible for doing the video is Trevy Caldwell of MyFlicks. Here is her website and she did the work on this video: Its My Flicks. So, if you ever need some good video editing done, I encourage you to talk with Trevy Caldwell and visit her website to get more information. She did an excellent job for me! Much appreciation to both CEO Chris Coralles and Trevy Caldwell for their hard work in making this video possible! Thank you both very much!

Home Sweet Home! Good To Be Back!

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

It’s Good To Be Back To Home Sweet Home!

Wife and I got back from Tennessee and working a gig at the Chattanooga Zoo. We had a blast just being able to spend time with family. When we got back our dog Brillo met us at the door:

Home Sweet Home

Our dog was very happy to see us! We have been doing a very good job of taking care of him. Currently, he is getting older and has glaucoma and arthritis. So, we give him medication for his arthritis and eye drops for his glaucoma. Our dog usually brings a toy with him in his mouth to the door when he greets us. That is his special way of greeting my wife and I and he doesn’t greet anybody else that way who is at the door. It’s funny!

My wife and I will be taking my mother out to Olive Garden here in a few minutes. She really loves Olive Garden and we also enjoy Olive Garden as well. Here is Olive Garden’s website: Olive Garden. It looks like it will be closing about 10 o’clock tonight.

The rest of the day, I just plan on relaxing and recuperating from our trip to Tennessee and working the two gigs. I got plenty of work going down this weekend as well. I am going to see if it is possible to work Applebees this Thursday from 7pm-9pm and I will be working two gigs as well this weekend in addition to the Applebees gig. One is a children’s magic show and the other is a regular magic show for teenagers and adults.

So, this should be very fun! Then of course, after I am finished, I will be back to home sweet home once again! After going to Olive Garden tonight, I also plan to play a little bit of Battlefield 1. That has been a tremendously fun game. Probably need to play a little bit of Rise of Tomb Raider as well as the Uncharted series video game. Well, time to end this blog post here. You guys have a great day!

Beautiful Day This Morning In Tennessee

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Really Beautiful Day Today!

Well, it’s day 3 for performing at the Chattanooga Zoo in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Today will be my last day today performing for “Boo in the Zoo.” In the meantime, I have been staying with and visiting with my folks in Tennessee. It has been really nice and like a vacation really. My wife and I have really enjoyed our stay here in Tennessee and my family has done such a wonderful job hosting us.

It’s nice to see how my dad’s side of the family lives in more day to day life rather than meeting them at a formal function and it’s not much different than live in GA really. My wife went to the haunted woods here in the local area where my dad’s side of the family live with my cousins and they had a good time. They also bought the children of cousin’s along too and I wasn’t able to go with them because I was working my gig at the Chattanooga Zoo. Here is a link to haunted house or haunted forest attractions that you can find in Tennessee: Halloween Haunted Attractions in Tennessee

This website basically reviews haunted houses nationwide and also has a state by state directory for haunted house attractions. They have some pretty big haunted house enthusiasts that go around reviewing these haunted house attractions and the website is very picky about who they choose as a reviewer. I assume this is because they want to be sure that they get the best people possible to get the best and most honest reviews of haunted houses for their website. That way people will check out their website and trust it’s reviews. Otherwise, the website might not be able to stay in business or just won’t be trusted.

Over at the “Boo in the Zoo” event they are having at the Chattanooga Zoo, they have camel rides as well as various other events going on.

Beautiful Day

The Chattanooga Zoo seems like they have some pretty nice events going on throughout the year and I really enjoy their zoo. It’s been one of the better zoos I have attended so far. It will be fun performing there on this beautiful day! Anyway, time for me to close this blog post here. You guys take care!

Life Lessons To Remember

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Life Lessons That Are Important To Remember

I think as I grow older and I gain more life experience perhaps one of the most important life lessons I have learned is that their are things that are far more greater than yourself. You are made for things that are greater than yourself in my opinion. Part of the passion that you live for is for things greater, bigger and more important than yourself. He who has a why can bear any how.

Life Lessons

I found this wonderful article that talks about the why of many of our motivations: The Why, The Motivation And Some Things Greater Than Yourself

A leading expert on resilience, Andrew Shatté, Ph.D., describes the “why” in terms of four levels:

Huffington Post Blog Article Writes: “Connect to Something Greater Than Yourself”

Level 1: Individual goals. At this basic level, you’re concerned mainly with what you have and achieve, be it a certain amount of money or standard of living, a specific job or goal, for none other than the pleasure and satisfaction it creates for you and you alone.

Level 2: Family. This takes your why a step beyond yourself to include the people closest to you. If your motivation includes doing more for your family, or setting an example for your children, then you function at this level.

Level 3: Community. You are driven not just by your own achievements or the well-being of your family, but by the world around you, be it the city or town in which you live to the global community.

Level 4: Religion, spirituality, values. If you feel connected to something larger than yourself, you’re driven by the very highest level of achievement, greater than the people around you, whether that means God, spirituality, or a set of values you live by. In short, something that will outlast and outlive you.

I have been writing down my goals every day, but as a veteran, I have also served my country during a time of war so I can identify very much with this set of 4 levels quoted from a Huffington Post blog post. I think for me, what drives me are my individual goals that I write down every day, my family, my country and my set of values. I am not a very religious person so I am not drive on the level 4 spectrum by God, but rather my set of values.

Chattanooga Zoo Gig Coming Up!

By Davenport Magical Entertainment, L.L.C. | Atlanta Magician

Chattanooga Zoo Gig Tomorrow!

I was very fortunate to get book through a referral by a magician friend of mine at the Chattanooga Zoo. I am looking forward to it! I have never been to the Chattanooga Zoo before. I bet it’s going to be awesome! On top of that, I will have a great opportunity to visit with my family in Tennessee. My wife will be going with me and we will be staying at my cousin’s house about an hour north of Chattanooga. So, that will make life much easier as far as traveling to and from the gig.

I will be performing at the Chattanooga Zoo on October 21, 22 and 23rd and then I will be returning home to Georgia late on October 23rd. So, it shouldn’t be too bad! I also found the zoo’s website here: Zoo Website. I was browsing their website and found the event I will be working which is going to be the “Boo in the Zoo” event. Here is the event: Boo in the Zoo.

I will be performing strolling close up magic at the “Boo in the Zoo” event. Here is what the zoo website has to say about the things that kids and others will be able to do at the “Boo in the Zoo” event:

Chattanooga Zoo website writes about activities for Boo at the Zoo:

Perilous Pumpkin Patch
Spooky Roll ‘Em
Phantom Corn Hole
Memory Boo
Sensory Mystery
Wizardry 101
Monster Smash
Ghost Grab
Pumpkin Bowling

Haunted Carousel
Haunted Bounce House
Mystery Slide

They also have some kind of pumpkin contest as well it seems.

Chattanooga Zoo

Here is what the Chattanooga Zoo has to say about their pumpkin contest:

Chattanooga Zoo writes on it’s website about “Boo At The Zoo” pumpkin contest:

All Zoo fans are encouraged to decorate a pumpkin, or two, and donate it to the Zoo for it to be displayed during our annual Boo in the Zoo event! The Zoo will pick a 1st place winner and runner up each week of the event for a special prize! Pumpkins can be all shapes, sizes, and color, and decorated with paint, glitter, buttons, and more! We ask that pumpkins are not carved.

1st Place winners will receive a free Zoo family membership for one year and recognition on the Zoo’s social media platforms. 2nd Place runner ups will receive a family 4 pack Zoo admission tickets.
